The early Trionic can eke phenomenal MPGs out of your gas. Some years back, a friend rode with my down to Atlanta to pick up his 93 CS. I had my 91 turbo, and on the return trip, his mileage was blowing me away on the highways. I'd get 28, he'd be getting 34...
But 40s sounds a tad high. Usually, only the Diesels Saab doesn't sell here get mileage like that! I was going to say that your EDU was set to Imperial gallons (5 quarts per gallon, instead of 4), which would almost explain it all, but if you did the standard math (miles since last fill divided by gallons of current fill), and it came that close, that's probably not your problem...
One thing, though, one calculation is not your history. You've got to do it regularly and be consistent about all aspects of the fill. Like always stop filling when the pump handle shuts off (unless you know your car gets a very low fill at that level), try to always fill around the same # of miles or tank level, etc. I've also found that a fill-to-fill mileage will usually be higher if the car was warmed up to operating temperature when you filled it, AND if you continue driving to another fillup. The cool downs, starts, and slow moving all kill a tank's mileage.
I wish my 9-5s got that kind of mileage!
