The alt had been howling but I don't think it was bearings. I'd done the VR about a year ago and noticed that the brushes were really wearing a groove in the shaft they ride on. New brushes helped, but it was still there.
So since the car was going west w/ #1 kid for 8 months, I figured a reman we needed. Got it at AutoZone. The new one took care of the problem. The shaft was really deeply grooved, totally shot at 167K.
