Having blown an upper radiator hose and a heater hose, I look at them more closely now. The heater hose pissed out most of the coolant and my wife didin't notice the smell or the temp gauge.....my bad. I bought a bunch of hoses for the car but realized, after looking at them, that most were still fine. This is a 97 with around 160K. I'll change them anyway since I bough them but most are fine. I did notice on my 94 that one of the heater hoses is soft/bulging. That one needs to be changed ASAP. My practice will be to look at them and squeeze them occasionally.
