Good question. Leave spark plugs installed so you don't knock any crud into the cylinders. Use rags or paper towels to wipe what you can reach by hand. There are places your fingers can't reach that can be reached with Q-tips held with needle nosed pliers.
Oil that has turned into varnish will yield to an old toothbrush if you spray the bristles with a grease cutting household cleaner such as 409 or Fantastik brands. Test a small spot if you don't know whether or not your cleaner will discolor aluminum.
The ceramic part of the spark plug needs to be clean. Best way is to pull the plugs after you've cleaned everything else. One plug at time, pull it, clean it, put it back torqued to 21 foot pounds. If the plugs aren't NGK BCPR 7ES then replace them no matter how good they look. Gap should be 0.36".
Only you will know how clean and pristine everything looks under the DI cassette when you're done. So don't overdo it and hurt your back.
