Unless I'm completely wrong, 9000's did not have Harman Kardon until 1995, so, unless somebody added it since then, your car did not have it. If somebody did add HK, they probably just added the speakers, and not the amp, even though it's a plug & play. What do you have for a head unit? I've changed speakers a number of times on cars, and I don't recall ever experiencing a significant "break-in" effect. I have currently got Infinity Kappas in my 9000 - 692i's in the rear, and 425i's in the front. The bass from them really isn't spectacular. I have a set of MB Quart components that need to be installed, which I'm hoping will really help with that. I also upgraded the amp to a JL Audio 300/4, which is infinitely better than the stock amp. Actually, prior to the JL, I had some Jensen that I bought used on fleabay for $50, and that was much better than the stock amp, too. Beware that the JL is power hungry, and will probably take $150 in wiring etc to install; if you pay somebody to install it, figure another $150. But, it's night and day compared to stock. I think to get any decent bass, you will really need a better amp.
My Land Rover has Harman Kardon, and it's much better than the stock SAAB system, it may even be a little better than the SAAB Harman Kardon, because it includes a pair of small subs in the trunk. However, that still hasn't stopped me from looking for better speakers...
