One always goes bad first. They CAN'T fail simultaneously. So if after rebuilding one, the other goes, it's not because of the rebuilt one (or new one) that the other fails. It's just post hoc, not propter hoc. Stuff happens.

The master cylinder and the slave cylinder sealing parts are made of the same sort of rubber, it ages about the same, and can be ready to fail at about the same time. But the slave is a much more static setup, an O-ring captive in a groove sealing against a sliding piston, whereas the master has a flared cup that needs full flexibility to keep its seal against the wall of the bore. I think it travels further per pedal push as well. So the master I think is likelier to be the first to go, and as it's a lot easier to change just the master on a 9000, if that's bad I'd just change the master, then if the slave fails while you still have the car, fix it when it goes.

As to rebuild kits, I found years ago on my Saab 99 that the rubber in the kits just wasn't the same as on the original cylinders, even when it was the same brand name on the packaging. More filler in it, failed quickly. I don't think they wanted you to be fixing them.

But on C900s I have rebuilt both masters and slaves with kits with excellent results over long time, no failures. The slaves I rebuild with O-rings I get from a local seals supplier, have posted sizes on the C900 board. Only pennies per. I'd do the same on a 9000 even tho you have to pull the tranny to get at it.
