Better to put BOTH wheels high in the air, with the car firmly supported on jackstands, and idle the motor. Then you can move around freely and listen. Don't forget to mind all that spinning mass and keep loose objects away from them. You're talking about having powerful forces in motion, and the wrong set of circumstances could result in injury or death.
But I agree with nacc, it may not be as diagnostic as you think, due to everything being "unsupported" and under no load.
Best thing to do first would be to have an assistant drive the car, while you listen from either inside or outside to isolate the sound.
