There are things that can be done to improve upon the original design that won't hurt..
SAS sway bars front and rear are probably the best upgrade I have done to any SAAB I have owned. It makes that nice easy body roll you get around turns...almost non-existent.
3 inch exhaust from the turbo back(have you looked at the original design for your downpipe?...not great) with a high flow cat, muffler and resonator...will have a nice low quiet burble at idle. Not loud or obnoxious cruising around..and have a nice low rumble when you start getting into the boost.
High flow intake...some people just put some holes in the stock airbox to let a little more air in..some people will replace the box with a filter..up to you. I recommend the AEM dryflow filter. No oils like K&N and it's sooooo easy to clean. Drys in minutes.
Stage 3 ECU tune done by one of the many SAAB tuners. It will act and feel and run completely normal and smoothly up until you decide to go WOT and feel what your turbo can actually do when it's boosting, safety..with all original safety parameters still in place, up to 20-22 psi.
I know some people don't agree with this level of tuning but there is much more that could be done and that is when it starts to wear parts out much quicker. A good stage 3 tune with the proper hardware will give you great fun, better MPG's when your foot is being gentle, and only a slight, if any(driver dependent), extra wear on wear and tear items.
Good luck on whatever you decide..The '98 is a great 9000 to own.
