Dear Saabers,

I have recently noticed that the heater on my 1997 9000 is not as hot as it was and that when sitting in traffic the heat drops off even more, returning (to an extent) once underway. The car warms up quickly and the gauge sits at 9pm, but the heater is definitely down on heat. I convinced myself that the thermostat was faulty and when I pulled off the top hose and collected the coolant, it looked really fresh, but had a quantity of debris in it that looks like brown tagliatelle, unfortunately I havent any pictures to post, but the substance crumbles betweeen your fingers, what is weird is that the coolant is generally factory fresh, but with strands of this material in it.
Anyway, I changed the thermostat - and the problem hasn't gone away, the heater is still rubbish.
Because it was so cold outside I didn't flush the heater or the rad, just put the new stat it before I froze.
Has anyone got any idea what this substance could be? As far as I know the car has never had Barrs Leaks in it, I have had it for 6 years and have changed the anti freeze before and never noticed any debris in it, the last time I changed it I put genuine Saab (Well, OK GM) coolant in it.
The heater doesn't smell, no misting up of windows or associated matrix problems, but it is using a very small amount of water.

I think my next step is to backflush the rad and the heater, but what I am worried about is what is the root cause of the debris, is it maybe the heater matrix breaking up? Are these sealed internally with some sort of epoxy that could be what is in the coolant?
The car is an auto, so I believe there is a transmission cooler built into the rad too.
All suggestions welcome, I am meant to be doing a big trip in it this Xmas, bit nervous of setting out now.
