manual trans replacement options

Well, I just picked up my second Aero, another '94, but it has a busted manual (5spd) transmission. Previous owner claimed he couldn't get it completely in any gear, and that it lurched around on him whenever he let the clutch out.
Despite being a '94, it has the newer style shift coupler, and I wasn't able to see it coming apart while moving the shift selector - although I'm not certain that it's as visible as when the older (rectangular) couplers go bad.
My question is, are there any options other than finding another FM57101 or FM57001? Can I splice together say the internals from an FM55505 from an OG9-3 with the 5th gear cover and bellhousing, etc. from my broken tranny?
Other Saab trans seem relatively inexpensive and easy to find compared to the FM57 ones. I'm looking to spend in the neighborhood of $400, beyond that and it'd be more cost effective to take the gearbox apart and fix the internals. Any suggestions?
