The Japanese have come a long way:
Started to rust within a year. Lived in NYC, Green Bay, WI, and Boston. When I gave the car away in 1981, the fenders were duct tape and primer. The rear bumper had rusted, and I replaced it with a 2 x 12. I saved the rocker panels by drilling holes in them and letting the mud and water drain out.
Two of the original Toyo tires blew out on a trip from NYC to WI. I was going 90 mph, and it was 95 F. It was a lot of trouble getting replacement tires in the middle of Ohio!
Coil was positioned so that every time it rained water collected on the top and caused misfiring. I wrapped and taped a paper towel around the top of the coil to absorb the moisture. Same towel lasted 10-years!
My first winter in Green Bay, I was driving along with the heater on high and cold air coming out of the heater. Just wasn't enough. I think I started putting cardboard in front of the radiator.
It was impossible to get the OEM NGK's, even the dealer was selling Champions, which would misfire in the cold weather. Took me a couple of years to figure that out. Now, with global warming, it's not a problem.
When did you get rid of your 510? Did you buy it when it was alread old?
