tz,
All the above suggestions are valid. Both my 96 CS and 97 CS had mystery coolant leaks. One was at the throttle body, (nodding to NOEL) and each vehicle experienced a broken radiator neck.
As you reported detecting a coolant odor at the driver's side,
1. Rub a dry paper towel vertically on the driver's side radiator tank. Evidence of a coolant leak will become immediately identifiable.
2. Rub a dry paper towel on the transmission number plate. If there IS evidence of coolant, continue upwards with the dry towel to locate its source.
3. Remove the aquarium (false bulkhead) cover to check it's drain for coolant escaping from a leaking heater core or hoses.
4. Place a large piece of cardboard under the radiator, engine, and bulkhead overnight, then check for evidence of a leak the next morning.
5. IF you are unsuccessful at determining the location of the leak, you very well may be experiencing headgasket failure. Remove the ignition cassette and examine each spark. A plug that is cleaner than the others is the cylinder the coolant is leaking into. Wipe the dry paper towel along the bottom edges of the cylinder head.
Happy SAABing!
