On both my wife's 9-5 and daughter's 9-3 the batteries failed just as the weather was getting cold. Nothing like sub-zero, but the only warning was a few more turns than normal when cranking. Then one day... nothing. Went the same way in summer on other daughter's 9K. A voltage test showed them as OK, but there just wasn't enough power to spin the fuel pump, crank the engine, fire the plugs, etc.
The flooding could come from the system putting more fuel in when the plugs aren't really firing.
When I lived a winter in sub-zero cold I put a heat tape around the battery, plugged it into the house and it always fired up just fine.
