A poor or aged battery is a good place to start. One of my cars was having problems starting if it sat for even one day at below freezing (and was starting fine before winter). Meanwhile, my other car would sit in the same temperature for 10 days, and start much easier. I swapped batteries, problem solved. The "bad" battery isn't even very old, and is in fact at least a couple of years newer than the good one. I even had it tested in the fall, and was told it was fine. Obviously it's fine-ness is temperature dependent. (It's a Canadian Tire spiral cell battery, which was a warranty replacement for another of the same type that also kicked the bucket - will never buy one of those again).
