Maybe it's my aging memory, but I don't remember having to remove any oil pan bolts, nor taking off the oil pan to remove the chain cover. Aside from the bolts that go into the block, there are the two that go up into the head. Last job was a few years ago on an 87 9000, previously on a couple of 86's. Alignment of oil pickup from block to cover is critical (see pic in Haynes - can get you page number after I get home this aft if you need it). I paid no attention first couple of times, but it bit me in the butt on the 87.
As far as the filter housing is concerned, I didn't touch that either, but unscrewing the oil lines from it was a real pain.
