Well done on the flywheel replacement--no small job!

Based on your post, I'm assuming it's an automatic transmission. A kickdown cable that needs adjustment will delay to engage the gears until 4000+ rpm (which is what I'm having now with my wife's '91--just fixed and replaced the transmission there!).

I have the AT service manual at home, but from what I remember, the procedure to adjust should be the same. Loosen, but do not remove, the stop nut on the kickdown cable. Have someone sit in the driver's seat, and with the car off, step on the gas pedal. You want them to hold the pedal slightly before WOT (wide open throttle--to the floor). Then tighten the stop nut. The sheath on the cable can move about 3/4" in either direction, and depending on how the transmission is shifting, that's the second part of the adjustment.

I'm sure others will have more input on this one--I'm still a rookie when it comes to adjustments like this.

However, even after all of that, not engaging in drive when hot sounds like a transmission problem. Does your car still have the ATF cooler (located under the radiator)? On my wife's '91, the cooler had been removed and the hoses looped together, hence the heat-induced tranny problems.
