Fuel pump removal - new input & a question

On my '97 9k CSE turbo, I've isolated the problem to the fuel pump using Ari's checklist.
And I've discovered something new to pass on regarding another method to remove the fuel pump retainer ring. Autozone's loan-a-tool program (you put a deposit on the tool, borrow it, and get a full refund on return - in working condition, of course)offers a fuel pump replacement kit that has an adjustable piece that fits inside the ring grooves and attaches to a 3/8" drive. I had the ring out in 5 minutes. This is described in the fuel pump FAQ on saabsite.com
But now I've come to a new problem - when I went to remove the fuel pump, it looks like the top has become separated from the bottom part. I can't seem to pull the pump up through the access. And I don't want to pull too hard as I'm afraid something will break.
I do have about a 3/4 to 7/8 tank full of gas. Might that make any difference in pulling the fuel pump out, somehow making it harder to pull up?
Thanks for any inputs/ideas...I really want to get this thing out tonight so I can get the right pump insert ordered tomorrow from Eeuroparts!
Thanks,
Todd inMA
