What you just described are the symptoms of a leaking clutch master, i.e. clutch pedal needs to be pushed far down to release, some grinding when you don't disengage the clutch completely, i.e. when you didn't push the pedal down far enough. There may be some fluid leakage, which will initially be hard to see because of the panel under the dash (it will eventually show up on the floor), and there may be some air entering the system, also contributing to sloppy clutch operation. Is there any loss of fluid showing up in the brake reservoir? The clutch and brakes are fed from the same reservoir, this would be an easy way to check for leakage.
A better test for a worn clutch is to get on the highway and punch the throttle in a high gear (5th), listen to the engine and watch the tach to see if the clutch is slipping, i.e. speed is not proportional to engine speed.
