I'm kinda clueless on clutches. I just don't wear them out and except for having a clutch replaced on our C900 when my wife was commuting in stop and go traffic every day, I've never had to think about one on any car I've owned in 42 years, so this is new territory for me. I know how they work but have never done anything with them.
I've priced it all out and The Saab Site is quite a bit less than eEuro AND has the OEM slave and master. Looks like about $700 for all new parts. I don't want to chance a rebuild on either the master or slave as it's hugely inconvenient for my kid to deal with if it fails --she's ~45 miles from Walter Wong and needs the car every day-- and I really don't want to have to worry about it .
But in looking at the FAQ on SaabSite, I see they say a bad master cylinder will let a clutch engage close to the floor, which is the first thing I noticed on the car. The rest is that the clutch just doesn't feel right--kinda soft. It's easy to get a little grind on a quick shift to 3rd, so I'm fairly sure from a couple short drives that the clutch is well on its way south. There are no leaks that are showing up in the driveway.
BUT... what other diagnostics can I have my daughter try to make sure we're not doing more than is needed? Would hate to spend the money for a whole clutch job when all I need is a new master. Would a leaky master show up inside the car at all?
I hate being dumb on this, but I just don't know clutches. TIA
