the upper takes the load--which is more than it can really handle. If it's cracked it needs replacing. Many here replace the rear upper in the dogbone and keep it rubber. Then use poly in the front upper. Have done that in two cars, works well.
When an indy did my lower rear, he also did the tranny mount (which was original at 180+K miles) and then did the front lower as it was heading south. Made sense to me.
