The V6 motors in the NG900, 9000 and 9-5 were there to satisfy perceived marketing requirements. Since "everyone else" had V6s, it was assumed that Saab should as well.
They were never intended to be the performance leaders when introduced. That role would always be held by the full pressure turbo 4 cylinder motors. They were intended to be smooth, agile powerplants, and they fulfill that role very well.
Of course, when Saab dropped the 2.8 full pressure turbocharged V6 into the 9-3SS/SC Aero and TurboX cars, that was a different story...
