I agree with Simon S as to the problem being related to ignition moisture. You reported the engine ran smoothly at higher RPM's. That would suggest the ignition cassette is operating as designed- -a failing coil will misfire under load, or at high RPM. The heat likely dissipated the moisture.
You might want to remove the DIC and liberally fill the boots with dielectric grease and wipe off the ceramic portion of the spark plugs with a paper towel before refitting the cassette. Spray electric contact cleaner in the cassette connector and on DIC pins before reattaching them.
