I live up here in Alaska where we get it all: snow, ice, ice fog, freezing rain, you name it. I run studs on the front wheels only just because I didn't want to pony-up for 4. I've done this for 4 winters now and it works...most of the time. It can get hairy if you're not paying attention when driving slow around corners as the back tends to want to go whichever way physics tells it to go when it's ice. But other than that, the studs work just fine for me.
I did get into a situation where I was making a left into a store parking lot and a police was waiting to pull out of the parking lot. Once I turned in front of him, my studs bit but my back end spun all the way around and I found myself facing the road I just turned off of and now next to the police. I politely waved to him and reversed down into the parking lot as I saw him laughing. :-)
