I've been thinking about this for a while as well. Somewhere, I saved a link to a fellow who cast himself a new center console with a docking station for his iPod. The article gives the step by step on how to cast the plastic that makes up the console.

I'd been thinking for a while of pilfering the center console out of an NG900, 9-3, or 9-5 which features the proper location for the key, and adapting it to fit the key barrel already in the 9k, and seeing if I could make it work.

If I remember right, the cast metal frame for the ignition and shifter ball socket (from the 9-5) might actually bolt right into the 9k. The trick would then be to cast a new cover for it that works with the existing e-brake and modify the wiring.
