trunk light wires

I'm trying to fix my interior trunk light. It used to work, then quit one day. New bulb didnt fix it. It should be simple enough, but testing the wires didnt make any sense. I couldn't get one to ground and I couldnt get a 12v reading either. There is a white wire and a brown wire.
Does anyone know which wire is supposed to be hot and which is ground?
The car is a '95 Aero w/ TCS
Thanks!
