Failure of the microswitch in the latch mechanism is a fairly common problem. You may be lucky if it failed in the off state as there are notes in this forum where a stuck switch results in a dead battery. I have the same problem. I took the mechanism out found the switch to be riveted in place and could not find a similar one on line in any case. So far I don't think having a trunk light is worth buying the whole latch mechanism. It does work once in a while if I bang on the latch.
