I like this thread. Perhaps 5 years ago it was hard to find a complimentary post here about the automatics. Now people seem to see them as they are - pretty good for most practical purposes, probably nicer than many more modern electronic autos. It seems to soak up turbo lag and you can change gear at will with the loud pedal. To me, the only major down-side is the fuel economy, but we are talking about a package designed 30 years ago.
The engine in the automatic Aero is the 200bhp version found in regular full-turbo CSEs because Saab decided to restrict the torque to increase gearbox life.
They can certainly break and leave you stranded but in many cases faults can be fixed and I too have paid up quite happily for a big repair to keep my Anniversary going.
