Aftermarket stereo install - no rear sound

I have a '98CSE with, I believe, the HK stereo system. The cd player is clarion, but there is an amp under the passenger seat and the head unit doesn't have a mfg label, but searching I've done says the '98's have the HK unit. Anyway, I have a Kenwood receiver with an output of 50W x 4 speakers. I can get sound from the front speakers when I bypass the amp, but not the rear. Is it simply that the additional speakers is too much for the Kenwood and I need the amp output?
