The issue is that the car is wired for an external amp (under passenger seat). The speaker level wiring for the rear speakers terminate at the amp, not at the head unit. The wiring to the rear amp from the head unit (Factory) is Line Level, not speaker level.
I know the HK speakers were component, but I don't think they were bi-amped, so you shouldn't *need* to replace them, but you might want to given the age and paper cones.
What he and I are both suggesting, is that you run new speaker wire, rather than hack the existing wiring. Fewer joints, better audio quality. This doesn't at all mean you can't hack the existing wiring into functioning, just that it might not be the best outcome for the work involved.
