Its hard to tell which water pump O ring you are talking about, there are 3. A small fat one at the belt end of the engine just behind the belt tensioner. And 2 in a coupler below and behind the exhaust manifold. The later are the ones that tend to leak - seep. The small fat one should be placed on the tube before installing the pump to minimize the chances of cutting or damaging it. The mating surfaces for the 2 larger thinner O rings on the coupler have to be cleaned well for a good sealing surface. With the age, the parts corrode and the sealing surface degrades, it is a good idea to use some sealer to help assure no leaks. I have used Permatex "Water pump & thermostat housing RTV". This stuff is supposed to be very resistant to anti freeze. Don't know how well it will hold up long term, but it makes for no leaks after installing the pump.
The water pump adapter kit replaces the 2 O ring coupler, which tends to corrode and have poor sealing groves for the O rings. A good idea if you don’t know how corroded the coupler is.
