I had the broken hose on my 97. It had been broken for years, and grit entered and plugged the tiny orifice on the side of the fill tube.
The effect on my car was as the fuel pump draws fuel out of tank, there was no way for vapor to enter the tank and subsequently the plastic tank was collapsing. Best to check the tank.
The hose simply connects tank to charcoal canister. There is no vacuum/pressure sensor or valve in that line, so when hose breaks there is no code or driveability problem.
The vacuum purge valve is located between charcoal canister and intake manifold. If that fails, or wiring is bad, or hose leaks, or ECU output to energize if fails, it could (will?)generate a check engine light and code.
