Sounds like you have a car with TCS (Traction Control). Question - did the cruise work when you purchased the car?
For TCS cars, the cruise control function is mainly resident in the ETS computer under the drivers seat. I can think of two possible causes. The first is easy and is the disable switch on the clutch pedal. Sometimes they get out of adjustment and prevent cruise from engaging. Simple check. You can jumper the switch to seat if it works. The second possibility is the ETS computer could not be programmed - this is likely in the event the car previously had the Throttle Body replaced. I had my throttle body replaced at the dealer and they tried twice to reprogram to get the cruise working and both times failed. They claim that any "fault" in the system will prevent correct programming. So I went from having a car with TCS faults and working cruise control to a car with no TCS faults and non-functioning cruise control. I would love to get my cruise control back.
