Key coming out is only one failure mode. Key not releasing is another, as is seizing up solid, even in start mode.
Once the Crappy metal casting and the lock slides have seriously worn Any unwanted possibility exists.
Key removal is not even a nuisance, being rightfully described as a Convenience. Broken lock bits are IMO a time bomb. If not willing to 'fix it I'd remove the lock itself and use the Key end to turn the Actual ignition switch.. both easy and practical with no downsides beyond oddly unsightly.
Note most new cars only require one to carry the ignition key in their pocket.. very nice.
