On the B202, you only replace the front half of the water pump, hence the paper gasket. You don't touch the part that is in the block. On the B234, you remove the whole water pump and that short adapter tube you referred to, so you need the two big o-rings for that besides the small o-ring for the tube at feeds the turbo (after a long trip around the block).
The last B234 water pump I got didn't include the back half of the pump so you had to reuse the the back half of the old one. You still had to take the whole pump out even though you split it once you got it out. At one time, you got the whole pump assembly when you got an OEM pump.
