Run the car until it quits, go back and remove the gas cap, note if you hear a "whoosh" noise when you do so.
If so, you've got a venting problem in your fuel tank! I had it happen on my car, and the symptoms were just like what you describe. Basically it acts like it's out of gas even when it's not.
What happens is the pump pumps fuel out of the tank and air has to be able to enter to replace it. If that can't happen, a vacuum is created in the tank. In my case, it actually collapsed the tank, damaging the fuel pump / level sender assembly and the tank itself. The problem turned out to be a broken hose connected to the filler neck up inside the wheel well. The broken hose allowed dirt to enter and jammed the vent valve in the filler neck shut.
Not a fun thing to have happen - it required replacing the tank, tank straps which turned out to be rusted, pump/sender, filler neck, and that hose.
