I am sure that you could get a good 9-3, but I have never owned one of these.
Probably a 1999 is not the best year for a 9-5.
2000-2004 had sludge issues due to (among other things) a poor PCV design. That being said, there are good deals to be found, but I would never buy one without paying the $250 to drop the oil pan and have a look.
At some point (2005?) The car got a good accountant treatment and some things were cheapened. Seat leather, radio and a few other thing. Probably not a big deal really.
2006 and on had the redesigned front end that does not appeal to some people me included, but if I found a good one I would buy it anyway since we are getting limited in our choices.
I don't know what year they changed the speedo, and radio but again I am not in love with the generic General Motors look. I would probably buy one anyway like I said before.
Some say that the turbo in the Aero is more sturdy, and for some reason the Aeros are less prone to Sludge. ???
If I had my pick of the litter, I guess a 2004 or 2005 Aero wagon with stick shift would be my choice, but condition and cost always win so I would take about anything if it had the proper maintenance, and was not from New England.
