I redid the water pump days after doing the radiator, t-stat, and all major cooling hoses in the early spring on the '97 Aero w/ 240k miles. Yes, it started a tiny drip after the thorough flushing, new distilled water, new Dexcool, etc was happily circulating for about a day.
Anyway, I replaced all the o-rings, including the turbo fitting and the baffle into the block. Cleaned out all the surfaces, especially the block mounting area, with cut down sections of ScotchBrite pads and elbow grease. Vaseline for the o-rings, and some BMW spec sealant for the water pump itself ... and I'm out of town right now, fairly sure I used Victor Reinz REINZOSIL-T anerobic sealant. If it wasn't that, maybe Elring Curil-T. I think it was the REINZOSIL, which worked great, not a drop outside, although I did let everything cure up for a couple of hours before I refilled the cooling system.
No leaks or drips in the past few months/4,000 miles since the installation. I did take my time with the banjo bolt you mentioned; I recall a certain alignment of 3/8's extensions and doing part of this from below and part from on top.
I did read the other discussion you linked to about the o-rings flattening out that Anders mentioned. I used a Hepu kit from eEuroparts, which seemed of high quality, and I have no complaints. Used the same kit several years ago on a '97 CSE - no leaks in the 35,000 or so miles before my son gave it away.
