I did try it... Looks like the Wayback Machine has brought us back a few days, so thought I'd repost my experience with this.
I plugged the resistor into the circuit and it works after a fashion, but is not quite right. The seat bottom heater only gets slightly warm even when turned full on and takes a very long time to get there. On the other hand, the resistor gets so hot that you can't touch it.
So it looks like less of a voltage drop across the resistor is needed, meaning lower resistance. Possibly I can get another identical resistor and wire in parallel to cut resistance in half. (The resistor is rated at 2.7 ohm, actual measured resistance is 3.0 ohm.) However while these big resistors are not terribly expensive to buy singly (about $12 plus shipping), trial-and-error with different values could get costly pretty quickly.
I recall it being mentioned that possibly the resistor was not needed at all, but I'm reluctant to risk burning out the remaining heating element or creating a dangerous overheating/burning condition.
