I have an intermittent odometer and speedometer that seems to work one day, then quit the next. All other instruments in the cluster work just fine. This causes the idle to drop to almost nothing as I decelerate to a stop. The issue has been going on for about 4 months, and recently both stopped working completely.

I removed the speedometer transducer at the transmission and drove it with a cordless drill will no effect on the odometer/speedometer. From this I conclude that the problem is likely somewhere between (and including )the speedometer transducer and the instrument cluster itself (not the gears at the trany). I have a spare instrument cluster and was planning on swaping it out and looking for loose cables...but was wondering what else I should look into before tearing into the dash. I read other posts talking about the following possibilities:

1) A loose cable at the firewall inside the engine
2) A way to test the transducer and connector itself (removing it and bench testing with an Ohm meter). I'm not the best with electronics, so could use some guidance here.
