OT: How to deal with ice dams? Posted by Bill Homer [Email] (#3427) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Bill Homer) on Tue, 18 Feb 2014 08:29:26 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I figure that a lot of SAAB drivers live in the frozen north, and this winter has been something unusual, so I need to tap some of the collective wisdom. See picture taken this morning of the southwest side of my 113 year old house with huge ice dams on the roof. The gutters and downspouts are completely frozen up. Today the outside temperature is finally above freezing, the snow on the roof is melting, backing up under the shingles and leaking into the house (drip, drip, drip). The roof is 18 months old, has two runs of ice shield (6' total) at the bottom edge, hasn't leaked before now; the roofer says to install heater tape next summer - thanks.
Does anyone have any good ideas of dealing with ice dams already in place? There is a flat roofed porch immediately below the big ice falls, so I'm somewhat tempted to climb up there if required, but also aware that this is dangerous, especially with at least eight inches of snow on top. Is there some way of shooting some salt up there to accelerate melting? Other ideas?
