One word: DYNAMITE
....or you could try this....
Get an old pair of panty hose or stockings from you wife's bureau. Fill them full of calcium chloride ice melt pellets. Throw said panty hose up on top of ice dam. It will burn through the ice dam pretty quickly and create a path for the water to get out so it doesn't back up under the shingles. I am in the same boat at my house. I have the mother of all ice dams on 1/2 of my dining room roof. I can't explain why the other half is ice free but I intend to find out in the spring. Another huge roof-burg in front over the garage doors. I have catherdral ceilings in both rooms. 12" rafters with insulation and baffles. The roof deck still gets too warm, even after repeated attempt to fix the ventilation. The key is to keep the roof deck cold. Warm roof=ice dams.
