It could definitely be a CV joint on it's way out. The can both clunk and grind. If you're able to look under the front of your car you'll see two rubber boots at the end of the axles right before they go to the wheels. If a boot is torn, then that's probably it (they can go bad without damaged boots too but rapidly getting worse indicates bad boots to me). Is there any difference in the noise whether you're on the accelerator or not? If so that's another CV indicator. Vibration under braking is almost always worn rotors, but especially since it went away it could be a worn ball joint of bushing, or rubbing on the brake backing plate (possibly caused by a worn component). May guess is either the CV or a badly worn balljoint. The latter should be cheap to fix, the former not too bad either, and in any case it should be something pretty easy for any mechanic to diagnose.
