Hello,
There are several possible problems you may have. Numerous times over the years I have found that the temperature switch on the compressor opens too early. that is the brass button screwed into the compressor. The power wire for the compressor clutch goes in and then comes out and proceeds to the compressor clutch. If it is going open early you will find power at the wire in the connector at the compressor but the clutch will not activate.
There also is an anti-frost switch on the evaporator which is suppose to shut off the ac if the evaporator begins to ice up. I have seen these go open as well.
Also it could be in the actual acc control unit. I have had this problem only a few times but as these cars age it raises the chances of this failure.
And there is always a chance that the failure is not related to an electrical problem such as these. The first thing I think you need todo is to get the problem to happen. When it happens see if the compressor clutch is still on or if it is disengaged. If it is no longer engaged I would check at the single connector wire and see if 12v are being supplied to the compressor or not. If it is not I usually run a jumper wire around the temperature switch to see if the clutch then engages. If it does the temp switch on the compressor has failed. If no power is present at the wire you will have to checkt hat side of the system. I do not have a wiring diagram with me at the moment for your car so that is about all I can tell you for now. Good Luck, Bernie at George Riggin Specialty Automotive
