Which compressor do you have? The Sanden or the Seiko? If I recall correctly, my Seiko was very easy to remove the shims. The hardest part was keeping the clutch from turning while removing the center bolt. I didn't have to remove the clutch at all. The shims were right there. From what I gather, the Sanden has a clutch cover which needs to be removed first, then the center bolt. Afterwards, the armature plate and then the shims can be accessed. In either case, the clutch remains in place since there is no need to remove it. Maybe (hopefully) you can post a picture or two?
