There is a procedure for adjusting the shift linkage in the Haynes manual - basically, you put the car in the specified gear (do a search), loosen the clamp, place a large nail in the special holes for this in both the transmission and near the gear selector lever, then tighten up the clamp. I had a replacement trans installed on my previous 1994 9000 and they failed to do this, was very hard to shift into 5th and reverse; after doing the reset, things were fine.
