My wife broke down in Troy, MI today (exit 69 of I-75 - Big Beaver Road if you know it), in her 98 9kCSE. The engine suddenly started running really rough and shaking violently as she was cruising along at 70mph. She pulled over to the shoulder and it didn't get any better at idle - it then stalled out.
She replaced the DI cassette (in sub-zero windchill - I have trained her well!) but that didn't help. Car would start and run really rough or just start then stall out. She got towed home to Toledo and when I tried to start it, it would run for a second then stall out. The fuel was somewhat low, but the low fuel light wasn't on and the trip computer still showed 70 miles to empty. Nevertheless I added a couple of gallons of gas, and of course it started right up and ran just fine.
What would make the car run so rough just because the fuel level was getting low, but apparently nowhere near "E"? It has an almost brand new fuel pump, and a new check valve.
The car does crank a lot before it starts when the fuel level is below about a quarter full so my guess is this symptom might be related?
There is also what I think is a separate electrical issue. Sometimes the headlights stay on when you switch the ignition off and remove the key Ignition switch problem? Headlamp relay? Also, very occasionally when you are driving along everything switches off for a fraction of a second and then comes back again, which seems to point to ignition switch issues. I don't think this can be related to today's issues, but wanted to mention it for complete disclosure!
