I have a '96 CSE 5 speed. I put a 98 CSE 5-speed ECU in and got a few extra horses and mileage ticked up a little bit. No compatibility issues at all. Plug and play, and a couple of adaptation runs.
Then put in a '97 ECU that had a JZW Stage 1 tune with the T7 mod. Again plug and play.
Now have a '96 or '97 ECU with a Richard LaBarre Stage 2 tune, T7 mod. Plug and play. Get about 28 mpg at 75-80 mph, around 240 HP.
I find that adaptation runs are important for getting the most out of these engines.
Some people claim to get 30-35 mpg, but I suspect that is flat road at about 65 mph with no head wind (or maybe a tailwind!).
I did one trip across the NY Thruway, watching the mileage on the computer. West of Utica I hit a major headwind and watched the mileage drop from 29 to about 24. Standing outside the car at a rest stop, my guess is the wind was 30 mph.
