When the connections behind the instrument cluster get dirty, loose, cold, hot, rattled ... the power to various parts of the display will go. The 'winner' is when the fuel and temp gauges go to zero, the low fuel light blinks 'on', and the only things working are sppedo, tach, and boost. Of course, that's enough but it can be a hassle at night.
I've taken the dash apart on two different 9000's , both mid-to -late 1990's, cleaned all the connectors with DeOxit Gold, swabbed w/ a Q-tip, replaced the EDU light bulbs, all the instr cluster light bulbs and then had them work fine [mostly] for the next year or two. There are good links on dash/instrument cluster removal. Order all the little misc bulbs first - it's very nice to have all new bulbs in and clean the plastic cover from the inside. Don't forget the 'hidden' screws or the sun-sensor.
If that sounds like a lot of work [it is], try slamming your hand down, fairly hard, on the dash above right side of the fuel gauge. It should bring them back for a while.
