I think slot may be a better word to explain what Ed N. means by notch. Only the exhaust cam should have a slot on the end opposite where the cam sprocket goes. This slot was used to turn the distributor on earlier models as he mentioned. You are correct about both cams having notches to mark timing position. The bearing caps are numbered as well, look carefully.
One more critical thing you must know is that the black bolts, with (longitudinal) slots cut in the threads, must be placed in the correct positions. If not, the lifters will not receive oil. These bolts go near the spark plug opening.
On the picture, note the positions of the dark/black cam bearing bolts near the spark plug opening (intake and exhaust sides):
