The CPS is timed to the crank so that when #1 is at TDC of the compression stroke the ignition fires but if I rotate the crank 360 degrees with the cams not connected #1 is now at TDC on the exhaust stroke. There HAS to be some way the CPS knows which of the two it is.

My concern is that if I have the crank at TDC on the exhaust stroke (according to the CPS) and then set the cams to TDC of the compression stroke I will have no spark when I need it, the ignition will be 180 degrees out (old terminology for those of us used to having distributors where if you put it in wrong you could rotate it 180 degrees for a 4 cal engine and it would be just fine)

So you are saying that the CPS knows wether it is at TDC of compression or TDC exhaust automatically? So there is no trigger wheel or other means to tell which, compression or exhaust, TDC it is?

And is there any reason that I can't just hook up the DIC with some plugs and rotate the engine and get a spark and check which of the two is happening?

Thanks all, don't think that I'm being argumentative, I just don't want to do it twice. And the machine shop lost one of the aligning dowels as well.
